Creativity Spurred by Boredom

Ajay: Hey! You are back! How did the vacation go?

Mark: Not great. There were too many Covid cases and I didn’t feel it was safe to travel anywhere. So I was just stuck at home, all bored.

Ajay: You know, boredom always might not be that bad.

Mark: How is that? When we don’t do anything, aren’t we wasting our time?

Ajay: It’s true that we entrepreneurs try to be as productive as possible and make the most out of every second. But I recently came across this book which says how with an adaptive approach boredom could in fact motivate us.

Mark: Which book is this?

Ajay: Out of My Skull by James Danckert and John D Eastwood. According to the book it is beneficial to have the capacity to be bored because unlike the common perception boredom could actually spur creativity.

Mark: But how?

Ajay: According to the authors, boredom is the state in which you want to do something interesting, but somehow you just can’t. It’s when you are bored of something that you want to actually do more or do something different right? And it’s that desire that has built civilisations and led innovations. So, instead of feeling bad about being bored, what if we entrepreneurs, who are surrounded by a lot of ideas, consider it a cleansing exercise?

Mark: Amazing thought. Definitely going to try that out!
