The Power of an Idea

Ajay: Hey! Saw you shooting some video at the park yesterday.

Thanvir : Yeah, for my new Reels.

Ajay: Reels? I thought you were a TikTok star!

Thanvir: Not since it’s banned in India.

Ajay: Oh!

Thanvir: The ban episode really scared me though. I had my whole influencer career planned around TikTok and one fine day it was banned. Instagram Reels saved the day.

Ajay: That’s the power of a great idea.

Thanvir: Care to elaborate?

Ajay: Sure. First tell me, what new idea did TikTok introduce to the world?

Thanvir: Umm.. short videos?

Ajay: Yes. Until then no one had thought of it or tried it. TikTok introduced it and it became a huge hit.  But one day the app was banned in India. What was a rage until then soon started vanishing from the people’s collective memory. Consumers, analysts and brands have all now moved on from the platform.

Thanvir: That’s right. Looks like even the parent company of TikTok, Bytedance, is not keen to make any effort to re-enter the Indian market.

Ajay: Correct. But when TikTok was banned, was that the end of short videos too?

Thanvir: Definitely not. Reels took over.

Ajay: Exactly my point. TikTok was kicked out of the market; But such was its impact that the new idea they triggered continues to live on even today, powering other brands, products and services. Why? Because the idea was bigger than the brand itself and in my view that’s the best legacy to leave behind.

Thanvir: Wow! Indeed.

Ajay: Our success, in many ways, is not just ours. There were great men and women who lived and died before us, legends who left legacies of their own. We are simply continuing from where they left off and building on the foundation of great ideas they contributed to the world. Now our strife should be towards giving the next big idea to the world, an idea that’s bigger than ourselves, don’t you think?

Thanvir: Can’t agree more. And my next Reels is going to feature you.
