You belong here

Aparna: Funny are the ways of the world!
Ajay: True, but what’s new here?
Aparna: The lady I just met at the park calls herself a ‘pet parent’ & got irked when I called her a ‘pet owner’.
Ajay: Well, you just witnessed a great lesson in management & ownership.
Aparna: How so, Dad?
Ajay: See, a pet owner just owns a pet. But a parent’s level of belongingness to the pet will be much more than an ‘owner’. If you look at the history of the pet industry, getting consumers to change from being pet owners to pet parents was a giant leap for marketing products!
Aparna: Yes, a parent will spend much more than an owner! Great idea.
Ajay: There’s more. Creating a deeper sense of belongingness always helps in business. Especially in business management. If you can make your employee feel he is not just a worker, but an owner of the enterprise, something pundits call “psychological ownership at work”, it can do wonders in productivity and overall performance.
Aparna: But how to get every employee to think & act like an owner? Seems a tall order.
Ajay: Many ways to do it. Give them a personal space at work, set personalized tasks & targets, decentralize decision-making. More on that later?
Aparna: Yes!
