Silence isn’t always golden

Ajay: “I closed my mouth and spoke to you in a hundred silent ways!” If I get a chance to reincarnate, I want to be reborn as a human, only to soak myself once again in the beauty & profoundness of mystical lines penned by great poets like Rumi.

Maz: They say his poems transcend geographies. I would say they transcend even contexts. Not just people from different places, but even people from different fields can relate to Rumi. For example, the lines you recited now make so much sense even when placed in the context of a workplace, its leadership, and staff.

Ajay: Wow, indeed! ‘They close their mouth and speak to us silently.’ If people at the workplace hesitate to talk or open up to us, they are indeed communicating something to us!

Maz: Exactly. Their silence tells us a hundred things like the absence of trust, encouragement, motivation, openness, and space to grow. People’s silence is a loud statement on our failure as leaders.

Ajay: Yes. It’s not the voices that a leader should be scared of, it’s the silence. It shows simmering dissatisfaction and insecurity leading to a dysfunctional workplace. Maybe I should take a break from management books and read more of Rumi for a change!
